The Battle

History & Significance

Shortly after his return from France, David II raided across the English border to demonstrate the restoration of Scottish military capacity. Edward III — distracted by the Hundred Years War in France — could not effectively respond. The raid served both to intimidate the English border and to establish Davids military credentials with his nobles. It was the first Scottish raid into England since the Guardian period and showed that the pattern of border pressure established by Bruce and Douglas would continue.
