History & Significance

Some 6,000 Hessian mercenaries — provided by the Landgrave of Hesse, the King's brother-in-law — served in Scotland during the '45. They formed part of the government forces that advanced through northeast Scotland in early 1746. The Hessians were involved in the skirmish at Keith in March 1746 and in various patrol actions through Aberdeenshire and Moray. Their presence doubled the effective government force in Scotland and was a significant factor in making continued Jacobite resistance untenable. After Culloden, Hessian forces participated in the pacification of the northeast.
