History & Significance

Following the Treaty of Perth in 1266 which transferred the Western Isles to Scotland, Alexander III moved to assert authority over the Isle of Man -- also included in the treaty. The island had been under Norwegian overlordship but was now formally Scottish. The campaign in 1275 completed the physical occupation of the island and ended the ambiguous status of Man as nominally Scottish but practically independent under its own kings.
