History & Significance

Following the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles in 1493, James IV made multiple naval and military expeditions to the western Highlands and Islands to enforce royal authority. Castles like Dunaverty and Cairn-na-Burgh were attacked. MacDonald claimants including Domhnall Dubh were imprisoned. James IV personally sailed to the Isles multiple times — a remarkable departure for a Scottish monarch — but never succeeded in permanently pacifying the region.
