History & Significance

Wallingford Castle, held for Matilda by Brian FitzCount and later for Henry FitzEmpress, was repeatedly besieged. In 1153 Henry arrived to relieve it, prompting a confrontation with Stephen at the Thames. Both armies declined battle, leading to negotiations that ultimately produced the Treaty of Wallingford. Skirmishes occurred between advance parties near the river crossing.
