Alnwick Castle passed back and forth during the Wars of the Roses northern campaigns of 1461-1464. In 1462 it was part of a complex three-castle situation where Alnwick, Bamburgh, and Dunstanburgh were all held by Lancastrians. A Scottish relief army appeared and the castle changed hands without major battle, illustrating the complex diplomacy of northern warfare.
