The Battle

History & Significance

At the Battle of the Boyne, William III sent a flanking column to cross the Boyne at Slane and cut off the Jacobite line of retreat. The Duke of Berwick (James II's illegitimate son) led Jacobite cavalry that held up this column long enough for the main army to escape. Berwick was later a Marshal of France.
