The Battle

History & Significance

The Campbells under Colin Mor Campbell secured their position at Loch Awe and began the process of accumulating land in mid-Argyll during the political disruption of the Wars of Independence. Campbell loyalty to Robert Bruce would eventually bring them vast rewards but the Loch Awe foundation represented the start of the most relentless expansion of any Highland clan. Inveraray and Loch Awe became the heartland from which Campbell power would eventually dominate all of Argyll.
