History & Significance

The final stand of Caratacus, who had led British resistance for seven years after the Roman invasion. The exact site is disputed — Caer Caradoc in Shropshire and several other locations have been proposed. After defeat, Caratacus fled to the Brigantes queen Cartimandua, who handed him to Rome. His speech before the Emperor Claudius, recorded by Tacitus, is a masterpiece.
