The Battle

History & Significance

The 1216 invasion by Louis of France was accompanied by a Scottish advance southward under Alexander II, who marched as far as Dover to do homage to Louis. Alnwick and other northern English castles submitted. Alexander II was later excommunicated alongside Louis for this invasion of a kingdom under papal protection.
