History & Significance

King David I of Scotland exploited the chaos of the Anarchy opening to push into northern England. Wark Castle on the North Tyne was among his early targets in 1136. Its capture gave him a foothold south of the border. David spent much of the Anarchy trying to advance his claim to Northumbria by supporting Matilda.
