History & Significance

King William I of Scotland invaded England in support of the rebellion against Henry II. A small royal patrol under Ranulf de Glanvill and Bernard de Balliol surprised the Scottish king and his household at Alnwick while he was raiding. William was unhorsed and captured, a stunning coup that immediately collapsed the Scottish invasion and allowed Henry II to concentrate on suppressing the rebellion.
