The Battle

History & Significance

After the Boyne, William III besieged Limerick personally. The Jacobite garrison held firmly under Sarsfield and the formidable Irishwomen who helped repair the breaches. Before the siege, Patrick Sarsfield led a famous night raid (Sarsfield's Ride) to Ballyneety, intercepting and destroying William's siege artillery train. William raised the siege and returned to England. Sarsfield became the great hero of Jacobite Ireland.
