History & Significance

Bernard de Neufmarche began his conquest of Brycheiniog in the early 1070s, building the castle at Brecon and systematically dispossessing the Welsh ruling family. The campaigns of the early 1070s through Breconshire were the opening phase of Norman penetration into the interior of south Wales. Bernard married a Welsh princess to legitimise his claim but used military force to enforce it. His conquest of Brecon was complete by 1093 when he killed Rhys ap Tewdwr.
