The Battle

History & Significance

Morar, the narrow coastal strip between Moidart and Knoydart, contained Loch Morar — the deepest freshwater loch in Britain — and was the territory of the MacDonald clan of Morar. Government columns reached Morar as part of the systematic western Highland pacification after Culloden. The MacDonald clan of Morar were committed Jacobites. Lord Lovat, chief of the Frasers, was eventually captured hiding on an island in Loch Morar during this period. Government soldiers burning their way along the coast encountered armed resistance from MacDonald clansmen defending their townships. The landscape of sea-lochs and peninsulas made this the most logistically challenging area to pacify.
