The Lord Rhys ap Gruffudd of Deheubarth took advantage of Henry II failed 1164 Welsh campaign to seize several Norman castles in Ceredigion. As Henry retreated from Wales having failed to penetrate the Berwyn Mountains, Rhys moved aggressively to recover the castles that had been built on his ancestral lands. This campaign began Rhys transformation from vassal to the most powerful figure in Wales.
