History & Significance

The MacKenzie rise to dominance in Ross-shire was achieved over several generations of low-level conflict with the indigenous Ross clan. This skirmish in the 1490s was one of many such engagements as the MacKenzies steadily absorbed the territories and following of the old Earls of Ross, who had lost their earldom to the crown in 1476.
