The Battle

History & Significance

Haakon IV of Norway assembled the largest Norse fleet seen in Scottish waters since the Viking age as he sailed south to reassert Norwegian sovereignty over the Western Isles. His fleet devastated Skye and harried the Hebridean islands before sailing south toward the Firth of Clyde. The campaign was the final assertion of Norwegian power in the region before the Treaty of Perth permanently transferred the islands to Scotland.
