The Battle

History & Significance

The exiled Earl of Douglas — living in England since Arkinholm in 1455 — led one last raid into Scotland in 1484 with English support. He was captured at the skirmish of Lochmaben. James III showed unusual mercy, imprisoning Douglas in the monastery of Lindores rather than executing him. Douglas died there in 1488. The failure ended any realistic Douglas restoration.
