The Battle

History & Significance

The Yorkist lords — the Duke of York, the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury — faced a royal army at Ludford Bridge and their nerve broke. They fled overnight: York to Ireland, Warwick to Calais. The town of Ludlow was left unprotected and was sacked by Lancastrian troops. This humiliation made the Yorkists resolve to fight for the crown itself, not just reform.
