Two French frigates came to rescue Jacobite leaders and evacuate French money and men from Scotland after Culloden. Three Royal Navy ships engaged them in Loch nan Uamh (the Cave of the Boat). The action was fierce but inconclusive — both French frigates escaped with their Jacobite passengers. The same loch from which the French had originally landed Charles Edward Stuart a year before.
