The Battle

History & Significance

Tibbers Castle near Thornhill was one of several Dumfriesshire strongholds Bruce seized in the days following the Comyn murder. The castle commanded the Nith valley approach to the heart of Scotland. Its capture extended Bruces control over south-west Scotland before the English could organise a response. The speed of Bruces initial campaign — killing Comyn, seizing multiple castles, and reaching Scone for coronation all within weeks — was a remarkable demonstration of planning and execution.
