History & Significance

Goring's cavalry caught Fairfax's infantry column strung out on the march from Leeds to Selby and attacked without warning. The Parliamentary foot, unsupported by cavalry, was unable to form effective resistance and was routed. The defeat was one of several Royalist successes in Yorkshire that preceded Adwalton Moor. It demonstrated the vulnerability of infantry on the march without cavalry protection.
