History & Significance

A separate action near Inverurie from the main Battle of Inverurie 1745 — in early 1746 the Earl of Cromartie (Mackenzie) and a government force were surprised and captured by Jacobites. The capture of Cromartie weakened the government's position in Ross-shire. He was later pardoned as part of the post-Culloden clemency for Scottish peers.
