The MacFarlanes of Arrochar and the Colquhouns of Luss were rival clans on opposite shores of Loch Lomond who clashed repeatedly throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Their conflicts were driven by territorial disputes, cattle raiding, and personal feuds. This engagement in 1439 was one of many such clashes along the western shore of Loch Lomond, a pattern of conflict that would culminate in the Colquhoun-MacGregor feud of the early seventeenth century.
