Called the 'Fair of Lincoln' because of the enthusiastic looting by the victors, this battle was fought inside the city between Lincoln Castle (held for the young Henry III) and Lincoln Cathedral (held by the rebels). William Marshal — aged over 70 — led the royalist charge personally. The victory, combined with the naval battle of Sandwich, ended the First Barons' War and the French Prince Louis's bid for the English crown. Magna Carta was reissued as part of the peace settlement.
