Scottish forces under David II raided deep into northern England in 1341 following his return from France. Newcastle upon Tyne was besieged briefly. The town walls resisted the Scottish assault and Newcastle held. The raid was part of a renewed Scottish pressure on the northern counties during the period when Edward III was focused on the opening of the Hundred Years War in France.
