History & Significance

The meeting at Runnymede in June 1215 where Magna Carta was sealed was framed by military force on both sides. The barons had marched on London and seized it. John was at Windsor. Both sides arrived with armed escorts to the water meadow between them. The document itself was a peace treaty imposed by armed rebellion and accepted under military duress. John repudiated it as soon as he had military alternatives.
