Lord Lewis Gordon's Jacobite forces operating in northeast Scotland seized Montrose harbour and its customs revenues in late 1745, using it as a point to receive arms and correspondence from France and the Continent. Montrose, a significant east-coast port, gave the Jacobites access to overseas supply lines. Government ships attempted to blockade the harbour. The seizure of a government vessel at Montrose provided the Jacobites with additional naval resources. These northeast coastal operations — managing the sea links to France — were a crucial but often overlooked aspect of the '45 rising.
