The Battle

History & Significance

Rob Roy brought approximately 500 MacGregor clansmen to Sheriffmuir but famously stood apart from the battle, watching both sides from a ridge. He intervened only to help Jacobite stragglers escape after the action ended indecisively. His non-participation was widely condemned as treachery or cowardice, though his personal feud with Montrose (who supported the government) complicated his position.
