Aberdeen, the most important commercial town in northern Scotland, was brought under Scottish control by Andrew Murray in 1297. The English-aligned castle and town were reduced as Murray swept the north clear of English garrisons. Aberdeen would become a flashpoint throughout the Wars of Independence, changing hands multiple times. Murrays 1297 campaign there was the first of several Scottish recoveries of the town.
