History & Significance

The rebellious Earl of Lennox held Dumbarton Castle against James IV in the opening years of his reign. After the rebel cause was broken in the field, the castle garrison surrendered. James IV proved more energetic than his murdered father in suppressing rebellions — his subsequent long reign (until Flodden) was remarkable for internal peace.
