As the baronial army under Simon de Montfort moved through Northamptonshire in the spring of 1264 ahead of the Battle of Lewes, there were skirmishes at several points along the route. Brackley, as a market town on the road between Oxford and Northampton, saw baronial forces pass through and minor confrontations with royalist sympathisers. The campaign of manoeuvre in the Midlands in early 1264 ultimately ended with the royalist capture of Northampton before de Montfort\'s victory at Lewes.
