The Battle

History & Significance

The earls of Hereford, Norfolk and Northumbria conspired against William while he was in Normandy. Archbishop Lanfranc organised the defence of England. The decisive action was interception of Ralph de Gael's forces in East Anglia. The rebellion's failure confirmed William's grip on England and ended the Anglo-Norman earldoms as a political force.
