The Battle

History & Significance

On New Year's Day 1136, Hywel ap Maredudd of Brycheiniog ambushed and destroyed a Norman force in Gower, killing approximately 500 men. This was one of three great Welsh victories in 1136 that dramatically reversed Norman expansion into Wales. Combined with the Battle of Crug Mawr and the death of Richard fitz Gilbert in a separate ambush, the Welsh nearly drove the Normans from Wales entirely. The English civil war between Stephen and Matilda gave the Welsh their opportunity.
