The Battle

History & Significance

The longest siege in English medieval history. De Montfort's son held Kenilworth for nine months against the entire royal army — its lake and massive walls made assault nearly impossible. Parliament issued the Dictum of Kenilworth to offer terms: the garrison could buy back their confiscated lands. Disease and starvation eventually forced surrender. The legal innovation of the Dictum helped wind down the Second Barons' War without further bloodshed.
