History & Significance

The original Fort George (distinct from the later great fortress at Ardersier Point) was located in Inverness itself. In February 1746, as the Jacobite army retreated north, they took Inverness and besieged the Fort George garrison. The garrison under Major Grant surrendered after the Jacobite artillery opened. The fort was subsequently blown up by the Jacobites — an act that necessitated the construction of the great new Fort George at Ardersier after Culloden, completed in 1769.
