History & Significance

Following Robert of Rhuddlan's death in 1093, Gruffudd ap Cynan reasserted control of Gwynedd, driving out the Norman garrisons that had occupied the country. This was his third successful return from exile and established him permanently in Gwynedd. He ruled until his death in 1137, presiding over the longest period of Gwynedd stability since before the Viking age. His patronage of Welsh culture made Gwynedd the literary and political centre of medieval Wales.
