The Battle

History & Significance

In the immediate aftermath of Alexander III's death the Bruce faction -- led by Robert Bruce the Competitor (grandfather of the future king) -- moved to seize Turnberry Castle, their ancestral stronghold on the Ayrshire coast. The Turnberry Band, a compact among pro-Bruce lords, was essentially a preparation for a bid for the throne. The Guardians responded militarily and the Bruces were compelled to stand down, but the episode established the antagonism between the Bruce and Balliol factions that would dominate the Interregnum.
