The Battle

History & Significance

Robert Bruce opened a second front against England by invading Ireland with his brother Edward. The campaign tied down English resources for three years and threatened English rule over Ireland entirely. Edward Bruce was eventually killed at the Battle of Faughart in 1318, but the invasion demonstrated the Bruces' strategic ambition and their ability to strike English interests beyond Scotland.
