History & Significance

The Battle of Chesterfield — fought partly in the marketplace of the town — was the last significant engagement of the Second Barons' War in the Midlands. The Earl of Derby, supporting the de Montfort cause after Evesham, was caught in Chesterfield and his forces routed. He was captured hiding in the local church. The victory effectively ended organised Montfortian resistance in the north Midlands, though die-hard garrison continued at Kenilworth until December 1266.

Casualties & Losses

Derby captured; rebel force scattered
