The Battle

History & Significance

During the Battle of Lewes, a baronial force seized the priory and surrounding buildings on the eastern flank to anchor de Montfort's line and prevent royalists from using it as a refuge or redoubt. When fighting reached the town, the priory became a focus of street-by-street fighting. Henry III ultimately sheltered in the priory before surrendering. Its possession was both militarily and symbolically significant.
