History & Significance

Cricklade on the upper Thames was contested between royalist and Angevin forces in 1144 as Stephen pushed into the upper Thames valley following Matilda's escape from Oxford. The town served as a base for raiding in both directions and its possession was crucial to control of the road network linking the west country to London. Stephen's capture of Cricklade tightened the strategic ring around the Angevin heartland.
