In the hours before the main battle of Tewkesbury, the Lancastrian army under Margaret of Anjou and the Duke of Somerset attempted to cross the Severn at a ford and escape. Yorkist forces blocked the crossing, forcing the Lancastrians to stand and fight near the town. The blocking of the ford was as significant as the battle itself — had the Lancastrians escaped, the war might have continued. The action at the ford forced the decisive engagement that ended the Lancastrian cause.
