The Battle

History & Significance

Through the winter of 1745-46 and up to Culloden in April 1746, Lord Lewis Gordon's Jacobite forces maintained control of Speyside and the Strathbogie area. Government detachments from Aberdeen and the coast attempted to probe north, but Gordon's men held their ground. The operations involved foraging raids, intelligence gathering, and suppression of government sympathisers. The area produced a steady stream of recruits and supplies for the main Jacobite army at Inverness. After Culloden, government columns swept through and the Jacobite network in the northeast collapsed.
