History & Significance

At the height of Scottish expansion during the Anarchy, David I's forces reached as far south as Lancashire. Lancaster was briefly under Scottish influence or control. This extraordinary southward extension of Scottish power — made possible by the complete breakdown of royal authority in England — was never repeated. The Scottish withdrawal after Stephen's recovery left no permanent trace of these advances.
