The Battle

History & Significance

Dunfermline Abbey was the burial place of Scottish kings including Robert Bruces father and Robert himself (though the conquest preceded Bruces reign). Edward Is occupation of Dunfermline during his 1296 tour was an act of deliberate political symbolism: the English king was desecrating the sacred heart of Scottish royal tradition. The removal of the Stone of Destiny from Scone completed the symbolic dismantling of Scottish kingship. Edward was making clear that there would be no separate Scottish crown.

Forces Involved

Edward Is military escort; no significant resistance
