The Battle

History & Significance

The siege of Dover Castle continued into 1217 even as the wider French war turned against Louis at the Battle of Lincoln in May. Hubert de Burgh's garrison at Dover had held for over a year. The Battle of Sandwich (August 1217), where the Regent William Marshal's fleet destroyed the French supply convoy and the fleet under Eustace the Monk, ended French prospects entirely. The Treaty of Kingston-upon-Thames in September 1217 ended the war. Dover's resistance became legendary in English historiography.
