History & Significance

1308 was the year Bruce consolidated his grip on Scotland north of the Forth. After the Pass of Brander in August, Bruce turned to Aberdeenshire where the Comyn family — his greatest enemies — still controlled large territories. In a series of encounters including around the Peel of Lumphanan, Bruce's forces defeated the Comyn-aligned lords. By year end Bruce effectively controlled all of Scotland except the English-held castles.
