In the days before the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715, both armies conducted cavalry reconnaissance and skirmishing around Dunblane. Argyll's government cavalry and Jacobite horsemen contested the ground between the armies. Dunblane — the small cathedral city at the foot of the Ochil Hills — was the geographic pivot of the campaign. Both commanders were trying to outmanoeuvre the other for the high ground of Sheriffmuir to the north. The approach skirmishes at Dunblane helped both commanders form their assessments of the opposing army's strength and position.
